How these tools are built and checked

Typing speed is easy to measure badly. A test that counts every keystroke flatters you; one that charges you twice for a mistake you already corrected discourages you. Both are common, and neither is obvious from the outside.

So we fixed the definition and hold every product to it: gross speed counts all typed characters as five-character words per minute, net speed subtracts only the errors you left uncorrected, and accuracy is judged at the moment you press a key. The English and Hindi tests, the practice pages, the games and the course all report the same numbers the same way, so a WPM earned in one place means the same thing everywhere else on this site.

That consistency is enforced by an automated test suite that runs against every change, not by good intentions. When we found the Hindi test had been charging mistakes twice — reporting roughly 28 WPM where the English test reported 40 for identical typing — we corrected it and wrote the test that stops it recurring.
