English to Urdu Typing

How Roman Urdu typing works here

You type the way you already text — kya haal hai — and each word becomes Urdu script as you go. There is no notation to learn: no capital letters for retroflex sounds, no accents, no special symbols. Ordinary spelling is the input format.

Why some words offer alternatives

Roman letters cannot express everything Urdu writes down, and pretending otherwise would mean guessing confidently and being wrong. Several sounds are genuinely undecidable from English spelling alone:

• s may be س, ص or ث
• z may be ز, ذ, ض or ظ
• t may be ت or ط
• kh may be کھ (as in کھانا) or خ (as in خوش)

Which one is right depends on where the word came from, not on how it sounds. For words the tool already knows, it writes the commoner reading and offers the others in a short list — choose one and it is remembered for that word until you reload. For a name or an uncommon word it has not seen before, it may offer only one reading. When that happens, changing how you spell the word in Roman is the quickest way to steer it.

Vowels you type but Urdu does not write

Urdu writes short vowels only rarely. ghar becomes گھر and madad becomes مدد — the vowels you typed are heard, not written. Long vowels are written: naam gives نام. You do not have to think about any of this; it is what the converter is for.
