What is a Good Hindi Typing Speed?

Hindi typing speed is measured the same way as English — Words Per Minute (WPM), based on 5-character groups typed correctly in one minute. Hindi Unicode typing runs a little slower on average than English because of conjunct characters (matras), so the benchmarks below are calibrated for Hindi specifically:

Frequently Asked Questions

Pick a typing method before you start. Phonetic (the default) lets you type Hindi words in English letters, just like our English to Hindi Typing — no special keyboard needed. Native Keyboard expects Hindi Unicode input directly, for anyone who already has a Hindi keyboard/IME (Windows Hindi keyboard, or Gboard's Hindi layout) set up on their device.
WPM is calculated by dividing total characters typed by 5 (standard word length), then dividing by minutes elapsed. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors. Our test uses Net WPM — the industry standard used by all government exams, in Hindi and English alike.
Mangal already works today — it's a standard Unicode font, so typing it through Phonetic (English letters) or Native Keyboard mode both produce correct Mangal-compatible Hindi text. Kruti Dev is different: it's a legacy non-Unicode encoding, and a dedicated Kruti Dev mode is in development for exams that still require it.
Yes! IndianTyping.com is fully mobile-optimised. Switch your phone's keyboard to Hindi Unicode (Gboard supports this natively) and type as normal — the text display adapts to Devanagari automatically.
Your text typed is never stored on our servers. Your personal best WPM is saved locally on your device (browser localStorage) only — it never leaves your device. We store only anonymised aggregate statistics to show site activity.
