What CPCT is for

The Computer Proficiency Certification Test is a Madhya Pradesh state certification that establishes basic computer literacy and typing ability for a range of government posts. Unlike a recruitment examination, CPCT does not select you for a job — it produces a score card valid for a fixed period, which you then use when applying for posts that require it.

That difference matters for how you prepare. A CPCT score is a credential you carry, so a better score is genuinely worth having, unlike a purely qualifying skill test where clearing the bar is the whole objective.

The two typing components

CPCT assesses typing in both English and Hindi, and they are separate skills with separate scores. Many candidates prepare thoroughly for one and assume the other will follow. It does not.

The English component is conventional QWERTY typing. The Hindi component requires a Devanagari layout, and this is where preparation most often goes wrong: candidates who type Hindi phonetically on a phone find that the exam expects a formal keyboard layout, and phonetic habit transfers almost nothing.

How CPCT typing differs from SSC

• Scope. CPCT also tests general computer literacy — file handling, basic applications, internet use — so typing is one section among several.
• Both languages. CPCT expects English and Hindi typing. SSC lets you choose one.
• Incentive. Because CPCT is scored, improving beyond the minimum has real value. In SSC, it largely does not.

Preparing for the Hindi component

This is where most of the preparation time should go, because it is where most candidates are weakest.

Decide your layout first and commit to it. Practising InScript for a month and switching to Remington a week before the test means starting over — the finger patterns share almost nothing.

Then practise Devanagari text specifically, not transliterated English. Hindi typing loads the fingers differently: matras, conjuncts and the half-forms produce keystroke sequences that simply do not occur in English, and speed on one predicts very little about the other.

Where to practise

For Devanagari speed and accuracy under a clock, use the Hindi typing test, and build up to it with untimed Hindi practice where pausing to think does not damage your score.

For the English component, the English typing test reports net WPM and accuracy in the form these exams care about. If your foundation is shaky, work through the typing course first — it is free and it builds technique in the order the fingers actually learn.
