Type whole words in English letters, not single syllables: a short word on its own is read as the common Hindi word it spells — ka becomes का, ki becomes की.

Hindi Swar (स्वर) — Vowels

Hindi has 11 main vowels, plus ऑ for English words and the two signs written with अ. A vowel at the start of a word is written as its full letter.

Hindi Vyanjan (व्यंजन) — Consonants

The 33 consonants are taught in groups (वर्ग) by where the sound is made in the mouth — the same order as the on-screen keyboard. Every consonant carries a short “a” until a matra or halant changes it: क is “ka”.

English letters have one t and one d for Hindi's two of each, so the engine chooses by the word — topi becomes टोपी but tum becomes तुम. If it chooses the other one for your word, pick the right spelling in the choices above the box.

Hindi Matras (मात्राएँ)

After a consonant, a vowel is written as a matra — a sign attached to the letter — instead of its full letter. Here are the matras on क:

The ि matra is written before its consonant but typed after it. For कि, press कि — your device draws the sign on the left by itself.

How matras combine into words

Consonant + matra makes a syllable; syllables side by side make a word. Press the keys in the order you say the sounds.

Long vowels: aa, ee, oo. Common words work either way — pani becomes पानी and paani becomes पानी give the same word.
Add h for a breathy sound: kh, gh, chh, th, dh, ph, bh — ghar becomes घर, bhai becomes भाई.
English words come out the way Hindi writes them: computer becomes कंप्यूटर, school becomes स्कूल.
Names and brands: start the word with a capital letter and you can also keep it in English exactly as typed.

Hindi Keyboard Typing

Conjuncts: क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र

A conjunct is two consonants joined by a halant. These four are taught as letters of their own, so the keyboard has a key for each — or build them yourself.

Common Mistakes

Leaving out the h. The h is part of the letter: khana becomes खाना, dhoop becomes धूप, chhota becomes छोटा.
Typing ि first on the keyboard. Press the consonant first, then ि.
Missing the halant. सत gives सत; स्त gives the joined स्त of नमस्ते.
Forgetting the dot. ड़ in ladka becomes लड़का and ज़ in zindagi becomes ज़िंदगी are different letters from ड and ज.
Accepting the wrong spelling. If a word comes out differently from what you meant, pick another spelling from the choices above the box.

Is this different from the English to Hindi Typing?

Yes. English to Hindi Typing is the dedicated converter: you type English in one box and read Hindi in another, with suggestions for each word. This page is a single Hindi writing box — write with the on-screen Hindi keyboard, your own Hindi keyboard or IME, or type English letters that become Hindi in the same box as you type.

Do I need a Hindi keyboard or IME installed?

No, though you can use one if you already have it — this page's on-screen keyboard works without any software. Click a character and it's inserted into your writing at the cursor, exactly where a physical key press would go.

Does the on-screen keyboard cover every Hindi letter?

Yes — every independent vowel, every consonant grouped in the traditional order, the nukta-formed loanword consonants (ज़, फ़, क़ and others), every matra, halant, anusvara, visarga, chandrabindu, nukta, the four commonly-taught conjuncts (क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र) and everyday punctuation. It also has ऑ and its matra ॉ for English loanwords — click ड, then ॉ, to start डॉक्टर. There are no numbers or English letters on it — type those with your physical keyboard.

Can I type in English letters here instead?

Yes — just type: mera naam becomes मेरा नाम as you type, and Hindi from the on-screen keyboard or your own Hindi keyboard mixes in freely. When a word has other genuine spellings, such as आसिफ and आसिफ़, they appear above the box to pick from. Start a word with a capital letter (a name or brand like Google) and you can also keep it exactly as typed.

Can I write a full message or paragraph here?

Yes. The writing area has no length limit — build up a sentence or a full paragraph a letter at a time, using Backspace to correct mistakes exactly as you would in any text box.

How do I type Hindi matras?

Type the consonant first, then the matra: क then ा gives का, and क then ी gives की. In English letters the vowel simply follows the consonant — kaam becomes काम.

Why is the ि matra written before the letter?

ि is written to the left of its consonant but said after it, so you always type it after the consonant: क then ि gives कि. Your device draws it on the left by itself.

How do I type क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र?

Each has its own key on the on-screen keyboard, or build it with the halant: क, then ्, then ष gives क्ष. In English letters, gyaan becomes ज्ञान and shram becomes श्रम.
