What is a Good Hindi Typing Speed?
Hindi typing speed is measured the same way as English — Words Per Minute (WPM), based on 5-character groups typed correctly in one minute. Hindi Unicode typing runs a little slower on average than English because of conjunct characters (matras), so the benchmarks below are calibrated for Hindi specifically:
| Speed | WPM | Who types this fast | Exam Readiness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 0 – 20 | New learners, hunt-and-peck typists | Needs practice |
| Average | 21 – 29 | Most Hindi Unicode users | Nearing SSC/CPCT level |
| Proficient | 30 – 40 | Office workers, regular typists | SSC / CPCT ready ✓ |
| Fast | 41 – 55 | Experienced typists | All exams ready ✓ |
| Expert | 55+ | Professional typists, stenographers | Professional level ✓ |

Frequently Asked Questions
This test expects native Hindi Unicode input — enable a Hindi Unicode keyboard on your device (Windows Hindi keyboard, or Gboard's Hindi layout on Android/iPhone) and type directly. If you'd rather type phonetically in English and get Hindi output, try our Hindi Typing Tool first to get comfortable with the script.
WPM is calculated by dividing total characters typed by 5 (standard word length), then dividing by minutes elapsed. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors. Our test uses Net WPM — the industry standard used by all government exams, in Hindi and English alike.
Not yet — this test currently supports Hindi Unicode only. A dedicated Kruti Dev typing test mode is in development for exams that still require the legacy font.
Yes! IndianTyping.com is fully mobile-optimised. Switch your phone's keyboard to Hindi Unicode (Gboard supports this natively) and type as normal — the text display adapts to Devanagari automatically.
Your text typed is never stored on our servers. Your personal best WPM is saved locally on your device (browser localStorage) only — it never leaves your device. We store only anonymised aggregate statistics to show site activity.
