Hindi Typing Practice

No timer, no pressure — practice Hindi typing at your own pace before taking a real test.

Two ways to type here: Phonetic if you type Hindi using English letters (most people), or Native Keyboard if you already have a Hindi Unicode keyboard/IME set up. Pick one below.

Why Practice Without a Timer?

Whether you type phonetically on an English keyboard or with a native Hindi Unicode keyboard, building muscle memory takes more repetition than English because of matras and conjuncts. Practice mode removes the countdown so you can focus entirely on accuracy — your live WPM and accuracy still show, but nothing ends the session early. When you're ready, take the timed Hindi Typing Test.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hindi Typing Test is timed — you pick a duration and it ends when time runs out or you finish the passage. Practice removes the clock entirely: you type at your own pace and it ends only when you finish the passage or click Exit. A short pause to think is normal typing rhythm and still counts, but anything longer than a few seconds is discounted from your active time, so hesitating doesn't quietly change your WPM either way. Your personal best is shared between Test and Practice for each typing method, since both measure the same thing.
Phonetic if you don't already have a Hindi keyboard set up — type Hindi words using English letters (like "namaste") and they convert automatically, the same way our Hindi Typing Tool works. Native Keyboard is for anyone who already has a Hindi Unicode keyboard or IME enabled on their device (Windows Hindi keyboard, or Gboard's Hindi layout) and wants to type Devanagari directly. Most people should start with Phonetic.
Only if the pause is unusually long. A brief pause between words — the normal rhythm of remembering a word or checking the target text — still counts as active typing time. Only the part of a pause beyond a few seconds is excluded, so a single long break (getting up, answering a message) won't quietly inflate your WPM by shrinking the time your rate is measured against, but it also won't punish an ordinary moment of thought.
Yes. IndianTyping.com is fully mobile-optimised for both typing methods — switch your phone's keyboard to Hindi Unicode for Native Keyboard mode (Gboard supports this natively), or just type in English for Phonetic mode. The text display adapts automatically either way.
Your typed text is never stored on our servers. Your personal best WPM is saved locally on your device (browser localStorage) only — it never leaves your device. We store only anonymised aggregate statistics to show site activity.
